If you’ve been thinking about applying for a new credit card, the American Express® Gold Card is one of my recommended top 5 starter cards — especially with the targeted welcome offer of up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points.
What You Get
Welcome Offer (Targeted)
Up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $4,000 in the first 6 months
Note: This offer is not guaranteed to appear for everyone — you find out how much you qualify for when you fill out the application.
4x points at restaurants (including takeout and delivery in the U.S.)
4x points at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per year, then 1x)
3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com
1x point on all other eligible purchases
Monthly Credits That Help Offset the Fee
$10 monthly dining credit at select partners (Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, etc.) — up to $120/year
$10 monthly Uber Cash for U.S. Uber Eats orders or Uber rides — up to $120/year
$7 monthly Dunkin’ Donuts credit-up to $84/year
$100 RESY credit-$50 for the first half of the year and $50 for the second.
That’s $424/year in combined credits if fully used
No Hard Pull Until You’re Approved
One of the best features of applying for an Amex card: you’ll know whether you’re approved before a hard credit inquiry is made. That means no impact on your credit score if you’re denied. If you don’t get as high an offer as you would like, copy and paste into an incognito window and try again.
Is It Worth It?
If you spend regularly on food, groceries, and travel — and you can take advantage of the monthly credits — the Amex Gold pays for itself and then some. Even though I hate remembering to use the monthly credits, I love the points I get easily from grocery shopping and dining.
